Insect Bite & Sting Allergy Reactions

When you’ve been bitten or stung by an insect, the discomfort can range from mild irritation to a more severe allergic reaction. Reducing itching can avoid scratching and skin infection, thereby supporting the skin’s recovery process. Understanding the symptoms and knowing how to treat them can provide much-needed relief, especially when you’re keen to feel better.

Recognising the Symptoms of an Insect Bite Reaction

When you’re bitten or stung by an insect, the most common symptoms are:

  • 1

    Redness and/or Swelling

  • 2

A small lump on the skin

  • 3

    Pain or soreness

When to Seek Medical Help

While most insect bites can be managed with over-the-counter treatments, there are instances when medical attention is necessary. • Dizziness
  • Stomach pain or nausea
  • High temperature and swollen glands
  • Joint pain, swelling and a rash.

In rare cases, you may experience a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). If you spot any of the following signs, you should call 999 immediately:

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Skin, lips or tongue turn blue or grey
  • Sudden drowsiness
  • Can’t be woken up after fainting
  • Children may go limp or struggle to lift their head.
