Midge Bite Repellent and Treatment

Midges are small insects that can cause an annoyance when they bite. Whether you’re hiking or relaxing in the garden, their bites can be uncomfortable and irritating. Don’t let these bugs spoil your time outside. Wasp-Eze can give you midge bite relief and help prevent you getting bitten again.

How to Prevent Midge Bites

To help avoid getting bitten, try these simple steps:

  • 1

Use a midge repellent: You can apply a midge spray before you go outside to protect yourself.

  • 2

Wear protective clothing: Cover up with long sleeves, trousers, and a hat to lower your risk of bites, especially when midges are most active.

  • 3

Avoid peak activity times: Midges are most active in the early morning and late evening. If you can, try to spend time outside around midday, when there are fewer midges.

Understanding Midge Bites

Midges are most active during the warmer months, especially in areas where moisture lingers. Damp woodlands, shaded marshes, and coastal regions create the perfect conditions for these tiny insects to thrive.

Although small, biting midges can cause a surprisingly uncomfortable reaction. Only the females feed on blood, and when they bite, they inject saliva containing anticoagulants that prevent clotting. It’s this saliva that triggers your body’s immune response, often leading to itching, redness, swelling, and irritation.

When a midge bites, your body releases a chemical called histamine as part of its natural defence response. Histamine is what causes the familiar itching, redness and swelling around the bite, and why the irritation can feel so persistent and hard to ignore.

How to Identify Midge Bites

Midge bites are usually small, red, and a bit raised, often showing up in groups. The area will feel itchy, and sometimes a rash or swelling can appear. While these bites aren’t usually dangerous, they can be very annoying and may get infected if you scratch them.

Midge Bite Treatment With Wasp-Eze

While they usually heal on their own, knowing how to care for midge bites can help reduce irritation and prevent infection. Here’s how you can treat midge bites:

  • A white checkmark inside of a green teardrop.

Gently wash the bite with soap and water to help remove any bacteria and lower the risk of infection.

  • A white checkmark inside of a green teardrop.

If there is swelling or the area feels sore, apply a cold compress for 10 – 20 minutes; this often helps reduce swelling and ease itching.

Try not to scratch the bite, even if it’s very itchy; scratching increases the risk of infection.
